 | In 2000, at the request of the papal nuncio, the Archdiocese of Detroit accepted pastoral responsibility for the needs of the Church in the Cayman Islands, 480 miles south of Miami in the western Caribbean. The archdiocese provides the only Catholic priest on Grand Cayman Island; he serves as pastor of the only Catholic parish. St. Ignatius, in George Town. Of the Cayman Islands’ 40,000 population, about 10 percent are Catholic. St. Ignatius maintains a parish church, a chapel on the far side of the island, and a school. Tourism and financial services industries are strong; the Cayman Islands do not have the problem of serious poverty that afflicts many places in the Caribbean. Among the challenges for parish ministry, however, are the great number of nationalities living on the three islands of the Caymans and the diverse cultures that result.
