Archdiocese of Detroit

These words from the prophet Jeremiah
are etched upon the cornerstone of
Sacred Heart Major Seminary. They
have been our driving inspiration since
1919, when the fourth bishop of Detroit,
Michael Gallagher, founded Sacred Heart as
a minor seminary. In 1988, it added a Graduate School of Theology to its College of Liberal Arts.

For eight decades, thousands of Sacred Heart graduates have been ordained for priestly ministry, with hearts patterned after the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Good Shepherd. They have been sent out into the vineyard of the Archdiocese of Detroit, and in the fertile fields of dioceses and archdioceses throughout the country. Throughout the world, Sacred Heart graduates have served, or are currently serving, the people of God in the nations of Poland, Western Samoa, Cameroon, Brazil and China.

Come to know our institution better through the following pages. Learn about our outstanding formations program, which aims to develop mature and holy priests and permanent deacons who are thoroughly prepared for collaborative service in today's parishes. Learn about our Institute for Ministry. Its degree and certificate programs educate lay women and men for the full range of pastoral ministry—to be "new evangelists for the new millennium." Come to know our faculty—priests, religious and lay—who are highly credentialed and committed to teaching with the mind of the Church.

Then prayerfully consider if you are being called to be a part of the Sacred Heart Major Seminary community. We welcome you!
