DETROIT — The Archdiocese of Detroit has wired $250,000 to Catholic Relief Services for its work in providing assistance to the people of Haiti in the aftermath of the Jan. 12 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks.
"The actual total of donations so far amounted to $248,326.73, but the archdiocese just rounding that up to a quarter-million dollars," said Joe Kohn, archdiocesan public relations director, Tuesday.
But Kohn emphasized that money was still coming in, as many parishes only held the special collection for Haiti last Sunday instead of the Sunday before. He said further totals would be announced as available.
Of the amount received and tallied as of the beginning of this week, $119,233 had come from parish collections, another $77,131.50 had come via the mail, and $51,972.25 had come in via the Internet.
Catholic Relief Service is the U.S. bishops' agency for overseas relief, and works hand-in-hand with other countries' official Catholic relief agencies, which typically operate under the name Caritas.
Kohn noted that some parishes took the special collection, but opted to funnel the money through private organizations, such as Food for the Poor, Cross International Catholic Outreach, the locally based Haiti Outreach Mission, or the Haiti-related group with which retired Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton is associated.
