Bond sales OK'd for proposed school

Detroit — A future north Macomb County high school took another step forward for funding, putting it closer to a projected opening date of fall 2009.
Austin Catholic Academy received approval from the Archdiocese of Detroit to create a corporate structure that allows for the sale of bonds, which will help finance the building of the school, according to the school's Web site. Groundbreaking could be as early as next year, said communications chair Meg Lopé.
About one-third of the approximately $30 million needed for the school have already been raised, and the sale of bonds will likely raise about another third, she explained. They're looking for more donations to cover the rest of the start-up costs of the school. "It allows for another avenue of funding, in addition to donations," she said.
Several parishes in the area have already committed to supporting the school, while others are considering such a commitment, the site said.
Although the school has been in the works for years, with an additional method of funding approved, the momentum is now picking up, Lopé said — especially when groundbreaking takes place and people can see tangible results from the school's efforts.
Lopé said she's finding that parents really want a high school in the area and have long supported it; now it's a question of raising funds.
Austin Catholic Academy will be built on 63 acres of land on the north side of 23 Mile Road in Macomb. The Midwest Order of St. Augustine (the Augustinian Fathers) have agreed to conduct the proposed new school. It would be co-educational and is targeting an enrollment of 800 students in grades 9 through 12.
