The Coat of Arms of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Daniel E. Flores, S.T.D. Titular Bishop of Cozyla Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit print version | en Español | back to Bishop Flores page

The personal coat of arms of the Most Reverend Daniel E. Flores represents his heritage and is ministry in the priesthood.
The shield is divided into two halves by a heraldic device known as a "bend wavy." This device, that runs from the upper left to the lower right of the design is also divided by a bend wavy to represent the two sides of the Rio Grande where Bishop Flores' family had their roots. The upper portion of the design and river are in the traditional Hispanic colors of Red and Gold and on the red field is a golden monstrance a classic representation of the Holy Eucharist, . . . the Body of Christ, . . . the Corpus Christi. This charge is employed to honor the diocese where Bishop Flores has served, most recently as Rector of the Corpus Christi Cathedral in the See City, and that The Eucharist is the central mystery of Catholicism and the core of Priesthood in God's Service.
The lower portion of the design, the river and field are blue and white to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, represented by the red rose, with green barbs and seeds, placed on this field.
For his motto, His Excellency, Bishop Flores uses the Latin phrase, "VERBUM MITTITUR SPIRANS AMOREM." By the use of these words from the Summa Theologiae of St. Thomas Aquinas (Prima Pars, Qn. 43; Art. 5, ad 2), His Excellency expresses that as a bishop his entire ministry is to tell the world that "the WORD is sent breathing forth love." This expresses the theological reality that Christ, the eternally begotten WORD, was sent into the world to breath upon it God's love for all mankind.
The achievement is completed with the external ornaments which are a gold processional cross, that is placed in back of and which extends above and below the shield, and the pontifical hat, called a "gallero," with its six tassels, in three rows, on either side of the shield, all in green. These are the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of The Holy See of March 31, 1969.
