When purchasing a llama, you are improving the lives of a family from the mountainous region of Riobamba, Ecuador.
Llamas are a better choice for the farmers of this region because their hooves are calloused making them more like hands. This reduces the destruction of the land that is caused by other types of livestock.
Llamas are very finicky and selective eaters. Instead of devouring an entire plot of land they will look for the plants they find most appealing and nibble on them. They will eat one plant and then mosey along and find another instead of plowing down the entire field.
Not only is this good for the crops, but it also reduces the amount of runoff.
When horses and cows tear up the entire crop, there is no longer vegetation to soak up the rainfall.
When it rains, which it does a lot, the water runs down the mountain instead of soaking into the soil, taking the fertile farming soil with it.
Yet another advantage of llamas is that their meat is one of the leanest meats on the market. The reduction of fat is healthier and provides more product to sell.
Llamas can also be used for leather to make goods.
Thank you for your contribution to help fight poverty in Ecuador.
